Betty,

      Kyoto gets quite a bit more chilling in winter than here.  In the winter, the typical night low there is about 5 degrees cooler than here, and the typical day high is 19 degrees cooler than here.  That is using the Fahrenheit scale.  Also, chilling here is often broken by times of heat.  It can reach 90 F or even 93 F in mid winter.

I wonder if theirs have lower or high chilling requirements?
Gardening is rather different here because there can be warm to even hot
spells in between winter freezes.
