No, not amphiploid. The two species have the same chromosome number, and pair well enough to be fertile (though it's my understanding that fertility can be somewhat reduced for a couple of generations). They can and have been backcrossed to the parent species.

I have wondered if Iris x norrisii is an amphiploid or do the chromosmes of the parent species pair well enough to be fertile without doubling.
If it is not an amphiploid, has anyone tried backcrossing to the parent species?
