question of mulch on Iris tectorum & Iris milesii

Hi,

The use of mulch on bearded irises is usually discouraged because it increases the risk of rot. Beardless irises often do very well with mulch because it helps maintain moisture. What about the Asian crested irises, Iris tectorum and Iris milesii? Their rhizomes seem more like bearded iris and are near the surface. Will mulching them to retain moisture increase the risk of rot or help protect them from stress?
