Re: Iris tridentata

The references I've checked suggest that Iris tridentata has relatively
poor bud count. One of the clones I have from Victor Lambou's SIGNA
03S266 collection from Wakula Co., FL collection has produced 5 buds for
me this year: two terminal buds and three branches. I'm attaching a
photo. Note that the final branch to bloom is taller than the main stalk.

I keep thinking I'll try some hybridizing of different clones,
particularly crossing the one I have with wider petals to those from
Victor's collection. My stumbling blocks are:

- I. tridentata needs to be kept wet in the spring to get a good bloom.
- My enthusiasm for pollenating is waining by the end of the iris season.
- A climate with dry summers is not ideal for raising lots of I.
tridentata seedlings.

Maybe next year...
