I've always thought missouriensis and lactea may be related. If you look closely at seeds, foliage, and form, you might be surprised how much they have in common.

Oh, I was also going to say it does bear more than a passing likeness to this Iris lactea also blooming in my garden now.  Both the flower and foliage.
