I'm *so* glad I learned the trick to growing Iris tridentata. When I
left for work this morning there were 10 blooms on about 6 different
plants. This is by far the most floriferous year for this species for
me, and I've grown it for over a decade. They started blooming weeks
earlier than usual this year too... I think on June 3rd.
A few years ago I was looking for pics of it growing in the wild, and
I'm sure I posted those links here... but yeah, I found them growing
side by side with carnivorous plants in low nutrient soil conditions
in South Carolina.
So that's what I replicated in my yard. I dug a carnivorous plant bog
bed at the downspout from my roof. It's small... triangular... about
2 to 4 feet per side. The pitcher plants, flytraps, and Iris
tridentata love it! There's also some orchids in there too... but
they haven't bloomed yet this year... so I can't claim if they love it
or not.
I also have Iris fulva in there, which should NOT like the low
nutrient conditions, but it did have a few blooms again this year...
so it's obviously content. :-)
I'll try to take some pictures later.
