It is placed in a separate subgenus, Nepalensis. Bearded iris are in the subgenus Iris and crested iris are in the subgenus Limniris, section Lophiris. The difference for Nepalensis is in the roots. During the winter Iris decora has swollen storage roots similar to a Juno iris, but in place of a bulb that will develop into a stalk in the spring, it has a small growing point, where the roots join, that will develop into a leaf fan. Bearded and crested iris have rhizomes. See photos

Iris decora has a well developed crest, but its relative, Iris barbatula, has a crest that is very beard-like (barba, Latin: beard).
