I went back to the U.C. Botanical Garden on Saturday. I checked the map, the Dietes growing at the location I photographed at the end of March is

Collection: Southern African
Catalog Number: 53.0921
Scientific Name: Dietes grandiflora
Country: South Africa

I wonder if they ever propagate it for their plant sales...

It shows 4 results for Dietes. There are 2 unidentified species from Malawi, collected in 1991 and 1993. There are two entries for Dietes grandiflora. Neither of these has a collection date, but from the catalog numbers I believe they entered the collection in 1953 & 1958; just because they have a catalog number doesn't mean they are still growing, though they may be. As I recall, there are maps of species locations in the gift shop. If I remember next time I'm there, I'll check to see if I can determine the catalog number of the plant I photographed.

      It is like the petals are wider, and the style arms are more erect.  I wonder if it is a hybrid, or a superior clone from within the species?

I have generally assumed that the cultivated plant usually sold has Dietes vegeta (now an invalid botanical name), is really Dietes grandiflora, however the Dietes in the botanical garden is more "grand" than they are.
