heat withering buds

I asked a friend in southern California about the situation with my iris, 
where buds emerged on stalks, but then withered. He says that he has seen 
this in tall bearded iris when heat and dry weather come on unexpectedly. The 
plants put up stalks with colored buds, but the buds do not open. So I’m 
going to cut all the stalks off and see if the plant puts up a new set later 
this summer. Their appearance was preceded by 5 days of unusually warm 
weather in early May.
