In my experience, Iris lactea will grow
really nice leaves under a variety of situations. To bloom, it
wants plenty of sun and an unrestricted root run. I have a row of
I. lactea in front of my cactus garden; most bloom fine, but those
at the shadier end rarely bloom. The only I. lactea I've managed
to boom in a container was in a 27 inch deep pot (note however, I
often grow plants on the dry side; maybe they would handle being
root bound better with different care). This species seem quite
happy in my clay soil. They are very drought tolerant, but an
occasional deep watering during summer drought is helpful. I.
lactea transplants fine out of pots, but seems less happy being
dug out of the ground. Maybe I damage the long roots too much
trying to extract them from the clay.
