         I have limited experience with this but:  this is a relatively 
hard species to germinate.  The best strategy is to buy a plant, wait for 
it to produce seeds, and sow them in the early fall.  I once had some seeds 
of ssp. brandzae from NARGS, and they were pretty easy.  (But they haven't 
bloomed yet, so who knows what they are...)
         If you are using dry stored seed, be prepared to keep the pot a 
couple of years, and you will probably get a few to germinate anyway.
         The emerging foliage is narrow and a gray-green color.
