new member, + iris
Ellen,
I looked to your garden website with interest since by world standards
I am a neighbor of yours.
I just joined this site a week or so ago and I've been trying to catch
up on years of messages and conversations.
I am just south of you in Dundee, New York, near Seneca Lake. By a
map, I should be Zone 5 but find that I do not have the winter ground
cover of deep snow that you have. In fact, it may be bare here for days
with freezing temperatures to zero or below. I like to stick with zone
4s and then I do not have to be so fussy about mulching and worrying.
(Lazy maybe?)
Though I joined this site to be informed about woodland plants, I found
with interest your antique iris. My mother belonged to the American
Iris society and owed a commercial iris garden in the fifties. She also
worked at developing her own varieties with a friend at Cornell U. I
have only three or four of her iris (+ one Siberian) and don't have a
clue to their names. Help? ! Also, I am looking for an antique bearded
with the common name "Happy Birthday". Would you be able to give me
clues about how to find it? In addition I would like to find some
antique Japanese iris that my mother use to grow.
I'm looking forward to visiting your Seneca Hill Gardens in the spring.
Thanks. Fran
