Yes , this is the project. I had been able to peel a top layer off an amaryllis flower without much problem, but the "kids " microscope wasn't able to give me the resolution I needed or the fine adjustments. Other types of flowers didn't peel very well. I just nicked the petal surface with an exacto knife and it stripped off very nicely. It did collapse but with a bit of water it flatened out very nicely. I was hoping iris flowers would be similar as they seem to have many of the same structural features. If so the preperation would be relatively easy. I had given a brief thought to chasing down a lab scope but thought I should finish off some other projects first. Actually I might have if I had found one with a digital camera attatchment.
I handn't made any effort to chase down any other possible technique of preparing epidermis layer samples.
The production of DNA from root tips or from stamens seemed to need a number of chemicals and some lab equipment to fix the cells requiring numerous washs and drying of the cells using various concentrations of chemicals and alcohol wash. It was interesting to read Simonets reactions to the "New" procedure of using gentian violet stain. I guess everthing was new once. He did his first preperations without it.
There may be some easier ways of preparing these samples.
