RE: Variegated I. tectorum?

Hi Jan, it took me several years to locate but I finally acquired the variegated version of I. tectorum. I got one piece from Akira Horinaka, president of the Japan Iris Society, and one from Carol Warner at Draycott Gardens in Virginia. It grows very well for us, I only killed it when I tried to baby it over winter in a cold-frame greenhouse. It's a nice cream variegation in early spring but the leaves change to all green after bloom. You can see a picture of the bloom and foliate on my web page at the "Species and Water Garden" button. I don't know if it comes true from seed...haven't tried to save any seed. Tectorum is our favorite iris of all we grow and the variegated version definitely isn't a myth!

Subject: [iris-species] Variegated I. tectorum?

I have heard this mentioned in the past, but I believe it to be somewhat
mythical. I thought I had hit paydirt last year, when my I. tectorum alba
seeds from SIGNA put up lots of little variegated seedlings. I figured I
either had the real thing, or they had sent me I. japonica variegata seeds
by mistake.
Well they WERE I. tectorum, BUT they lost the lovely clear variegation by
the time they got a few more leaves.
My question is - does this mean the potential for variegated plants is in
these little guys? Will further crossing maybe bring the trait out? I am
interested in both facts and opinions here :-)

Cheers, Jan Clark, in Australia, where I. versicolour still pops out a bloom
every now and then, but we are about to hit the iris doldrums.
