Jim,
        I didn't mean to put words in your mouth.  I'm just trying to suss out just what factors make it hardy for some of us in the far north, and not hardy for you.   I don't believe snow cover is a factor here, as we often have pretty open winters.  Do you want to hazard a guess?

No, Ken, those are your words NOT mine. That edge where any plant is happy cannot be drawn as a straight line. I just say for my specific conditions tectorum is happier on the south side of my area. It's pretty obvious that different climates, soils and moisture levels as well as a protective lawyer of snow will make a major difference.
I wish it were as happy here as it is for you as it's a beautiful iris.
