I currently exchange seeds with hybridizers in California and New
Zealand. We get to grow more crosses, and we then send each other
pictures when they bloom. Sometimes a plant will do better with one
of the hosts. I had success growing one Pacific Coast iris cross
that died in the garden of the California grower who made the cross.

Trading seeds worked really well when I was exchanging with another
rhododendron hybridizer in the Maritimes. (on the Atlantic coast of
Canada). Rhododendrons make masses of seeds and grow into such big
plants that it is hard to grow enough to really see the full
possibilities of a cross. I also made custom crosses for people who
didn't have access to the plants - I remember sending seeds to
someone in South Africa. I wonder how they fared?
