Re: Iris sanguinea ?

Hi Will,

The nearest area of Iris sibirica is in 2000 miles from this locality.
What method of verification do you mean?
Both samples have unbranched two-budded stem as Iris sanguinea should have, but MOST Iris sibirica herbarium samples have unbranched two-budded stem too, on the other side I saw one very branched Iris sanguinea herbarium specimen from Japan.
Seedpod shape can help but this feature is unclear too, for example I never saw in herbarium three-edged seedpod that I saw on the cultural varieties of Siberian irises.

Hi Yuri,

From the photo's it appears that these are either I. siberica or more likely a natural cross of I. siberica and I. sanguinea....If you can get a sample I am sure that Dr. Rodionenko could verify.  If he is not available I would suggest Dr. Nina Alexeeva.  I have talked with her and she is very aware of the studies of Dr, Rodionenko and has also done several field studies of her own.

If you do get an opinion from either of these sources please let us know the opinion.
Thanks

All My Best.
