Re: Iris wattii

If you look at http://www.rsabg.org/iris/phylogeny, it shows Iris japonica being moderately distinct from Iris wattii, genetically. I know they sequenced Iris wattii from the U.C. Berkeley Botanical Garden, which is the Johnson Clone.

I know there is some research suggesting that the Johnson Clone of Iris wattii is distinct from Iris confusa, but I'm not sure if it has been published yet. Maybe someday we'll know where the more confusa-looking wattii's fit in the big picture.

In the next few days, I'm hoping for my first bloom on Iris wattii 'Johnson Clone' x Iris wattii ex SIGNA 06S297 (descended from Darrel Probst's collection). I just brought the container into the kitchen a few minutes ago.

Iris wattii and Iris confusa bloom at the same time, look identical, are only distinguishable with a ruler, and not really even then. I'm sure my brother and I have (at least somewhat) different DNA.

Hmm,
what time of the year do you bloom?

My brother is a lot larger than I, in every dimension. Otherwise, we are practically identical. Could we possibly be separate species?

Here is a photo of Iris wattii that I bought from from M & C Willets,
Rare Bulb Growers (Bulbmania.com) in 2001. Originally I was thinking it
was a large I. confusa because the flowers are so much smaller than the
Johnson Clone. The two species do seem only to be distinguished by the
size of the flowers, but the dividing line is between 5 and 6 cm. These
blooms are 7 cm from the tip of one fall to the tip of the opposite
standard.
