Re: Spring

Horns are a beard extension. As it gets longer it lifts up at end, and
looks like a tiny standard. Like a spoon on the end of a handle (the
horn). If this gets larger it is called a flounce.

Chuck,
Â
Thanks for that. It came as a bonus rhizome to my order two year
ago, and all my attempts to look it up came to naught. I am delighted
with the flower. ÂI think that the color is a bit purpler than
bluebird. I take it that self beard means that the beard is the same
color as the fall. Technical terms -- horns and spoon -- never came
across them before; can you define them for me?
Â
Thanks,
David E.

This is a space age iris. Probably "Scented Bubbles" There isn't any
iris registered as "Scented Berries"

SCENTED BUBBLES (Monty Byers, R. 1985) Sdlg. B-9-3. TB, 36" (91
cm), E-M
Heavily ruffled bluebird blue (RHS 94B/94C); self beard lightly
tipped yellow orange in throat, 1.5" blue horns and occasional spoons;
pronounced sweet fragrance. Sky Hooks X Victoria Falls. Moonshine
Gardens 1988.

I wrote before about my Iris that looked like it was going to be
cleistogamous. For nearly a week after its blue petals had already
started to extrude from the spathe valves, it expanded just a tiny bit
each day. I kept expecting it to be open each day, but no. I watered
it, figuring, maybe it needs more water to build up enough internal
pressure to open. Then, one day, it expanded to a full 8" wide. The
Iris is âScented Berriesâ, and now that two huge flowers are open, its
sweet perfume pervades the entire yard. It stands about 3' tall. I
planted it in autumn 2011, and this is the first year bloomed. It has
a very weird beard â it looks almost like a separate petal.David E.
