Re: most popular irids

I guess the easiest thing to do to assess popularity and availability is to check the racks of packaged Dutch bulbs for sale in a garden centre.

If we do that,ÂHermodactylusÂwould have to be on the list! Belamcanda and ÃPardancandaÂare staple potted garden center fare as well. I am of course joking, as I fully agree with their inclusion in Iris. Horticulture has been slow to accept.

1.) Which "Top 4" genera of irids would you say have long been the mostÂpopular & readily available? My thought is: Crocus, Crocosmia,ÂFreesia, and Gladiolus.

With Crocus taking the top place by far, potentially over Iris. I feel that Crocosmia is a newcomer, but maybe only in colder climates? Ixia and Sparaxis have been around forever, but I'd say they're no longer popular.

2.) Which other genera of irids would you say are quickly increasing inÂ
popularity in recent years? Try to limit yourself to 6 or so. MyÂ
thought is: Dietes, Moraea, Neomarica, Tigridia, Sisyrinchium, andÂ
Solenomelus.
Â
I feel like Sisyrinchium, while increasing in availability, might not be so high in popularity? It is the only hardy genus besides Crocosmia I ever see in garden centers in the Midwest though. I'd think TrimeziaÂor Cypella over Solenomelus, but I don't have a good feel for what warmer climates are growing.
Â
Are you going for general public popularity, or bulb enthusiast popularity? :)
