I didn't know they were fragrant either. histrio ssp. aintabensis smells similar, while histrioides 'Major' is actually somewhat unpleasant. The reticulata clones I have in bloom at the moment are not fragrant. This one was mail-order from Jānis Rukšāns. I haven't had much luck germinating reticulata seeds, though they can't be that hard.

Iris histrio ex. Yarpuz, Turkey. I think this is ssp. histrio? Much taller than ssp. aintabensis and blooms with the leaves instead of before. Very fragrant, rather like Iris pallida.
