Re: test message

Hi Kathleen,

Some small species that might do well are
  • Iris cristata
  • Iris gracilipes
  • Iris henryi
  • maybe Iris verna

Certainly in my climate (a bit inland from San Francisco) they all need light shade on summer afternoons. They also want regular summer water. Joe Pye Weed’s Garden carries them and your season is probably late enough to order during their spring shipping season (I have to wait till the very end of their fall season). They following are be a bit more sun tolerant

  • Iris graminea
  • Iris sintenisii
  • Iris ruthenica
  • Iris cretensis (I bought a lovely little variety named 'Kotsifou Gorge' from Plant delights that had a bloom this year, but it is not in their spring catalog)

If you want a few spring bulbs, you might try

  • any of the reticulata irises
  • Iris bucharica
  • Iris cyclogossa (it is small in my garden though I have seen photos of large plants)

I’ve had issues getting messages to this list, so am sending a test message here, with an Iris question:

What species of iris should do best in rock gardens in the coastal Pacific Northwest? I ask because I have a new rock wall that is slowly being planted, and I’d like to add irises to it. Pacifica Iris are doing well along the foot of the wall, and I’m interested in smaller species in the wall, if possible.
