Species at Lowes and Beginners Questions

I went to Lowes this afternoon just killing a little time. In their
pond plants area there were Iris versicolor and Iris pseudacorus. A
few still had blooms but most did not and quite a few had seed pods.
They were in 3 inch square pots sitting in the water with the other
pond plants. They were $4.88.

BEGINNERS QUESTIONS... I do not have any species YET. Would these be
good ones for me to grow in Central Texas? Do they have to be in
these conditions to do well or can they be planted in the regular
garden soil with extra water given? What would be the best species
for me to try without having to put in a pond environment? I am in
Temple, Texas(Zone 8).

Thanks in advance for any advice.
