Re: Blue-eyed Grass

Yes, Anchorage is much warmer than some parts of the Lower 48
states, but please do not let anyone know! We have a strong warming
effect from the Japenese Current on the south and several large
mountain ranges that protect us most of the time from the chilly
artic air on the north and excessive rain that comes with the warm
southern air. (I like 26*F for a nice warm winter day - any warmer
and the ice starts to melt, a but the temperature is usually
averages in the teens.)

Our winters are longer than most of the upper Great Plains which is
what many of the plants from southern climes cannot withstand. we
also do not have the heat that many of you have in the summer (I
think 65*F is a nice summer day.) i suppose to sum it up, Anchorage
has a relatively narrow annual temperature range.

A small note: Alaska IS part of the continental US (whereas Hawaii
is not). many people use the term the "continental US" when they
really mean "contiguous US" - which has the same meaning as our term
the "Lower 48" (states). i realize that this is probably the
mapmakers fault since we are often depicted as a small island south
of Hawaii - if we are even included on a map of the US at all!

as for seed sent to SIGNA, i will make a better effort to get the
seed that i usually collect mailed in this year.

now that i have been made aware of so many species, i will pay more
attention and try to get a name put to the seed.

maybe we will be over 60*F today! it has been a very early and
record breaking hot spring so far. we have had weeks in the 70's,
but we are more back to normal now. So, if the rest of you are
still cold, i think we have your heat - which you can have back now.
