Can you believe it? I. pseudacorus 'Sea Krill' won Best Specimen at the Greater Kansas City Iris Society Spring Flower Show last Saturday. I don't just mean best species, I mean best iris in the whole show. This has been a trying year, very few bearded iris flowered at all, skimpy bloom on most beardless. The show featured mostly LA's and pseudacorus. Also a few spuria's and some folks even found a few TB's to show. Older ist better! In my pond there were only a few cultivars that bloomed well, LA's 'Dixie Deb' and 'Ann Chowning' were perfect. Most LA's had few to no blooms, same with virginica and versicolor. Some clumps of pseudacorus bloomed while most did not. I should select for good recovery after a terrible spring freeze, but I hope to never witness a spring this poor again.
