Just had the first bloom open on my third bearded X
tectorum hybrid. Inspired by 'Paltec' (Denis 1928),
I've been trying these difficult crosses for a number
of years but have only gotten three hybrids so far.
My first hybrid is registered as 'Flying Dragon'. I
don't know its exact parentage. It came up in potting
soil that I'd reused, because I thought none of the
seeds were going to germinate. 'Flying Dragon' is
taller and has larger flowers than 'Paltec' but it
grows much more slowly. Iris City Gardens is trying to
increase it enough to introduce.
My second hybrid bloomed last year and was supposed to
be Iris tectorum 'Alba' X ('Kupari' pallida x
variegata). From appearance, I think it is more likely
that the pollen parent was actually Iris furcata,
which I was using at the same time. Unfotunately, this
hybrid bloomed on all three fans, and then lost all
foliage -- "bloomed out". But, the rhizomes still are
firm, and maybe one day it'll decide to grow again.
The third hybrid (which pictures follow) is from
('Kupari' X cengialtii) X Iris tectorum. The flowers
are about the same size as 'Paltec' but maybe a little
darker and on stalks 30 inches tall.
