Re: [Fwd: SIGNA database update]

Dennis,

Very nice! I particularly like the fact that "Where to buy" is listed with the species.

I finally transfered the species database (which was hosted on
www.badbear.com/signa) over to the SIGNA website. The old site now
automatically redirects traffic to the new site.

I like the new layout a lot better. And I'm proud of how well this
project has matured in the last 10 years. The database now boasts 1382
pictures of 333 species. And there have been over 1.7 million hits to
the site since it was originally launched. (Please note, on the new
site the hit counter is isolated to just the database portion of the
SIGNA website. If you visit other parts of the SIGNA site you'll see
that the hitcounter disappears.)

The newest feature is the "Where to buy it" list. For each species you
view, there is a list of nurseries on the left side of the screen that
sells that species. I have been adding nurseries slowly over the last
few weeks, going alphabetically off the old site's commercial listing...
and I've only gotten to Joe Pye Weed's. I'll keep adding more in my
spare time. The attached file shows an example of what I mean.

Another new feature is that you can click on the large photos to advance
to the next one in the photo album. This is similar to how photo albums
work on Myspace and Facebook, and so on.

Another new feature is that I have "frozen" certain species in the
database. These are species that have been officially renamed or
reclassified, and I want people to use the latest ("correct") binomial.
For example, if you click Pardanthopsis dichotoma, you will be
automatically redirected to Iris dichotoma. All the information &
photos under the old epithet have been manually transferred to the new
one. Affected species (so far) are...
Pardanthopsis dichotoma >>> Iris dichotoma
Belamcanda chinensis >>> Iris domestica
Pardancanda x norrisii >>> Iris x norrisii
Iris kaempferi >>> Iris ensata
I may also do Iris setosa ssp. canadensis >>> Iris hookeri. Can you
think of any others that ought to be frozen in this way??

If you haven't visited the site lately, a new contributor named Özgür
KOÇAK posted 16 photos of unusual irises from Turkey last week. Kelly
Norris, Ken Walker, and Christy Hensler also added quite a lot of new
photos this month. And Rafael Diez Dominguez uploaded dozens of
pictures in the last several months. His photography is superb! Just
look at his picture of Iris susiana...

Go have a look!
