It seems like that would be good evidence that Murrayana is a
virginica. Crossing white versicolor to regular versicolor should just
result in regular versicolor, but crossing white virginica to regular
versicolor would give regular ×robusta, which is indeed "taller than
either parent and often with purplish spring growth."
