Well, the iris I hope is I. perrieri started blooming
today, but we got hit by a hard frost overnight, and many of my iris flowers
look like tissue paper today, even the buds that were opening this
morning.
I could still take a picture of the buds, but even in its
mushy state, it looks like Lowell's photo from back in Dec/10.

Subject: Re: [iris-species] Iris perrieri ? El; It is possible that this is I. perrieri but from just this picture I would be hesitant to say for sure. Perrieri has basal branching like an iris aphylla but is a 40 chromosome plant. I tried to grow it in Missouri zone 5 and it died in the winter. making me believe that it would not grow North of zone 6 or 7. Although it comes from a mountain in France I am not sure that the climate there is very harsh. From pictures and my plant it seems to have leaves that are rather strongly ribbed compared to Iris aphylla and as I remember it did not go that dormant in winter like aphylla. I believe it is much closer related to Iris sabina another 40 chromosome Iris than to aphylla which has 48 chromosomes. Nigel Service is the expert on this plant but he is not on the internet that I know of. |
