Subject: [iris-species] bloom update

How annoying.  None of my Iris brevicaulis are going to bloom this year.  What's up with that?

I tried an experiment with Iris fulva last year.  I built a bog bed in February 2010 specifically for growing Sarracenia (carnivorous pitcher plants) and Iris tridentata.  The media I used was pure Canadian peat, which is very acidic.  The irises loved it.  Then on a whim, mid-summer, I put lots of Iris fulva in there too.  The Iris tridentata were thriving in their new home, growing larger than ever.  The Iris fulva seemed to curl up in the fetal position, not growing at all, and presumably resenting their new home.

To my surprise, the Iris fulva woke up this spring are now blooming like crazy.  They appear just as happy and vigorous as the Iris tridentata.  Iris tridentata is still weeks away from its normal bloom time, but I expect tons of blooms on that too.  And also, the Sarracenia are blooming.  That's what I call win-win-win !
