pollination indicators

I have been making many crosses this spring.  Sometimes after I pollinate a flower it stays open blooming for 1 to 2 more days.  Sometimes after I pollinate a flower it fades (wilts) overnight.  Is this a reliable indicator for unsuccessful vs successful pollination result?  Furthermore... if the flower is still there on day 2 or day 3, is it receptive to more pollen?  Should I try adding more pollen (perhaps from the same original pollen parent)?

For example, I applied pollen on some Iris virginica yesterday.  There were two freshly opened flowers.  I pollinated them last night.  Now... roughly 21 hours later... one flower is completely wilted... the other flower is completely in tact.
