To encourage my fellow experimental hybridizers out
there (of tectorum and bearded irises)... I have two
new seedlings (still pretty small) that should be from
both bearded and tectorum parentage. I'm always a
little hesitant to make any claims until they've
flowered, but I'm thinking these might not be just
from contamination/stray pollen.
The first is from a bearded seed parent -- Iris
pallida spp. cengialtii X white pallida 'Kupari'. This
season, I had pollinated it heavily with tectorum
pollen and got just a few partially developed seeds.
One of these has sprouted already (with no
stratification) and is now about an inch tall with
several leaves. I'm thinking it really might be a
hybrid, because it is a bit of a runt and has
unusually narrow leaf blades. Time will tell, but I
expect that if it is a hybrid, it will probably be
very similar to the 1928 Denis hybrid 'Paltec' and my
recent hybrid 'Flying Dragon' (both purple selfs).
This brings me to the second seedling. It is from Iris
tectorum var. alba as the seed parent. I did the cross
during the summer of 2004. The pollen that I used was
a mixed collection from a bunch of F1 bearded diploids
(from the cross of the white Iris pallida 'Kupari' X
Iris variegata 'Beardsley clone'). The pollen parents
were purple bitones, yellow/purple blends and
plicatas, but all carried the glaciata gene from
'Kupari' and a full half of genes from variegata. The
seedling looks even more likely to be an actual hybrid
than the first one -- it doesn't look at all like a
typical tectorum seedling, but looks just like a
typical diploid bearded seedling. I sure do hope that
it is a hybrid; especially since it has a better
chance of being a color other than a purple self. I'm
hoping for maybe a white or pale yellow.
