Walter,
I plan to try converting tectorum to tetraploid
myself, since there doesn't seem to be a tetraploid
form available anymore (if ever). I think that using a
tetraploid tectorum with tetraploid Tall Beardeds, is
the best strategy for producing a diverse and also
fertile new type of iris.
Iris pallida X variegata has typically given me purple
bitones, but I've also gotten plicatas and also ones
with quite a bit of yellow blended in with the purple.
Four typical F1 seedlings are pictured in the image I
attached to a previous posting (I'll attach again for
ease of finding). The pallida X variegata F1 are the
four pictures grouped together on the bottom left. If
you can't see e-mail attachments, you can see the
image here at the archives
(http://www.hort.net/lists/iris-species/nov05/msg00012.html).
As for your dream of doing plant breeding full-time,
I'm dreaming of doing the same some day. For now
though, I guess I can't "quit my day-job". So until
that day, we'll just have to fit in whatever
hybridizing we can. Best of luck to you.
Tom
