Re: Re: new member

The intent is to create a reference that would cover all types of Irises with an emphasis on the species as the roots of the other forms. It is a natural evolution of the SIGNA checklist. Some difficult areas have been the bulbous Iris because the descriptions of the newest Dutch irises are published in Flemish. The area that will get the least attention is the many Modern Tall-bearded Hybrids although I hope to cover groups like Amoena, Plicata, etc. Another way of looking at the work would be to say that it attempts to define any Iris term one might come across. Outdated terms like Evansia will be defined because if one is reading Iris literature one will come across such terms. A few years ago I was more excited about the project but have been unable to find a publisher. I have at one point divided the work into 5 volumes with about 2000 photos but it seems unrealistic to think in those terms. Until I finally finish, I will not know what form it will finally take.

Hello Robert,
An iris encyclopedia!  Tell me will it include all the various groups of irises?  This sounds very exciting to me.  I did ask some time ago about Spuria irises and if there were any books on this irises or at least any that did a fair job of covering the species, but did not received any responses to my questions. I will look forward to your response.

I just found your e-mail. I am very appreciative for the input. Sometimes one wonders if the work one does is even seen. In a few years I hope to have an iris encyclopedia that will be an expanded version. I haven't decided whether to try to publish it or just make a CD. Thanks for your comments it does an old man;s heart good.

Bob,

A delightful opportunity to thank you for the Checklist. I use it
rather frequently or just browse for the joy of it.

I wound up with an extra copy and sent it to the Ontario Rock Garden
Society, where it was warmly welcome for it thoroughness.

interested in the SIGNA checklist. I hope my previous post did not
sound like a grumpy old man. Even though I fit that description I am
delighted that you are interested in Iris species. The checklist has
been a labor of love for almost 20 years now and has continued to
improve with each update. If I live long enough and have the energy it
will develop into an encyclopedic work on Iris. Although there have
been additions from the last year, we usually offer it for sale in even
years. This means that the current files are not all updated for 2007.
