RE: Fairy Wands

Hi Jim,

Regarding Dieramas in New York, the main person I heard about who was giving these a try was Ellen Hornig, at her Seneca Hill Perennials nursery.  She was getting plant material and encouragement from Panayoti Kelaidis.  Her nursery was in Oswego, in the band along the southern shore of Lake Ontario.  This is a place which is USDA zone 6, because of the proximity to the lake, and also a place with massive snow cover in winter.  I heard her speak at the local NARGS chapter several years back, and I think I recall that she had several species, one or two of which was a better bet for survival in upstate NY than others.  I’m sorry I don’t recall any of the species names.  But most of the rest of this region is zone 5 or even 4, and I am not aware of anyone having much success with these.  I’d love to hear otherwise—anyone?

It's not often I see a place selling a half dozen Dieramas. Does
anyone here grow these? I have heard of a few people growing some of
the species in z5 New York. At any rate these are fun to look at.
Check out the link for Annie's Annuals to see them. FYI the only bad
thing I ever hear about Annie's is the high prices.
