Friends.
The faux address on these emails which are circulating--and there are several variations-- is that of our member, Dorothy Stiefel, Irisacher@xxx.xom.
Please know that Dorothy's computer is fully protected. This nonsense is being sent around by someone pretending to be Dorothy's computer.
In such situations the email address which is seen is never the real email address of the sender. They are not about to sign their real names and addies to messages intending to cause mischief. I had one message arrive a few weeks ago which represented itself as an email from the HIPS editor who lives in California. Analysis of the relay trail revealed it had originated in Australia.
My husband, the IT consultant who explained all this to Dorothy a few minutes ago on the phone, reminds us that when it comes to safeguarding our systems, the onus for protection is always on the recipient. It's unlikely that opening the email itself presents a hazard--the bad guys have not gotten that good yet, although it is coming---it is the link which is the hazard. If the email is from someone you know, like Dorothy, but it does not sound like them don't be lured, don't get curious, and don't click on it We are probably going to see more of this pesky stuff as time goes on.
Dorothy says she is taking the night off, and so is her computer.
Cheers!
