growing Iris ventricosa

I've been growing Iris ventricosa from seed. I've had the
plants for a few years, though none have flowered yet.
I had them in three pots with two plants each. This year
I moved two of the plants to reduce competition. Here's
a picture of one. You can see how the rhizomes had worked
their way down 6 inches over the last three years. It was
in an 18 inch deep pot and the roots bunched up at the
bottom. It is now in a 32 inch deep planter. I used PVC
pipe to create system that lets me get water 18 inches
down in the pot while leaving the surface dry (it doesn't
rain here in the summer so I have complete control of
watering during the hottest months of the year).

The other I. ventricosa I translanted was growing in
almost pure sand. That proved to be a bit lean for
optimal growth. This one is now in a bed I built mostly
for arils and junos. It is 22 inches deep and filled with
soil containing lots of sand, gravel, and crushed rock, but
also has compost, potting soil, and a small component
of the clay soil it is sitting on. I put another PVC watering
pipe under this iris.

Iris ventricosa has a reputation for being intolerant of
transplanting and both plants were shocked by the
move, but I see some new green growth, so I think
they will make it.
