Dennis,
We covered existing gardens with 6" sand to raise them after 3 extremely wet
years. The Versicolors, Setosas, Ensatas, Siberians, Pseudacori, one Pumila,
and daylily seedlings transplanted into the sand are growing much better
than when they had been planted directly into frequently saturated, slowly
drained garden soil.
The sand is easier on tiller tines than the existing soil with lots of clay
and small stones. Weeds are fewer and easy to pull. We've started raising a
large bed in front of the house with a sandy gravel mulch. These plants are
growing much better after raising the bed 3" so far.
The growing season here continues to be 4 weeks behind. Our apples
are ripening a month later than last year. Too much damp cloudy weather.
