Re: digging irises


I often divide by removing part and leaving part.  Depending on the kind 
of iris, I then try to meet the remainders' needs just as I would do 
were I planting them newly;  pH factors, mineral powders, compost, 
whatever they would require to encourage them.  If they are beardeds, 
and in this part of the country those must be planted high, and they've 
dug themselves down, I use a shovel to raise the entire clump if I can, 
without separating out what's left and disturbing the roots as little as 
possible.  If they're clean shaven I add compost but not at a level that 
would give more encouragement to voles.
