Ellen,
it seems you have put stalk with very small part of rhizome and roots
(or thay have grown in water?). If so new shoot have grown from
sleeping bud. I doubt if stem of beardeds can do so, because they
break of without rest of rhizomes leaving shallow cavity on the old
rhizome.
