iris seeds mimicking berries [1 Attachment]

As far as I know, Iris foetidissima with its orange seeds and Iris
domesitca with its black seeds are the only iris that mimic berries. In
both cases, the seeds remain on the plants, clearly displayed, when the
pods open. Curiously, I. foetidissima blooms here in May and I.
domestica starts blooming during the last few days of July, but the pods
open at the same time, as we approach fall. I took the attached photo
this morning.

I'm assuming the seeds eaten by birds and distributed in their feces,
but I have not read anything about that. Does anyone know if research
has been done on this topic?
