Re: Re: CULT: fertilizer

Has anybody experimented with different sources of
nitrogen for their
irises?

I haven't really experimented but I purchased my
first Iris in 1994 (an introductory collection of
8 from Cooleys). They bloomed nicely the first
year. They just sat there in 1996 and 1997. I
decided they were a waste of money and time. I
had always used 10-10-10 fertilizer at the
recommended nitrogen rate for lawn grass from my
soil tests. My soil is so sandy that when I
watered it all washed away.

Then in 1997 I started using time-release Osmacote
14-14-14 in all my beds. In 1998 the iris were
magnificent and I became hooked. The new ones I
planted in the fall of 1998 bloomed and rebloomed
in 1999. They are nice clumps now and several
have bloom stalks. I attribute the difference to
the Osmacote and regular watering through our dry
periods in the summer.

I haven't tried Arils but think my normal growing
conditions would probably suit them.
