Mark,
On Bill Shear's suggestion a couple of years ago, I tried English
irises since they prefer a colder, wetter climate. They do well in the north
of Scotland, for instance. Anyway, I bought an assortment of
mixed English iris bulbs in late summer '98 from McClure & Zimmerman in
Wisconsin and they all bloomed in '99. I planted the E.I. in part
sun/shade in a moist part of the garden and they did seemed to adapt
fairly well.
They need more water than most bulbs. I have them interplanted with
Siberians and Asiatic lilies. They are late bloomers as opposed to the
"Dutch" bulbous irises. They have fairly large flowers and are tall and
sturdy. Most of mine were in various shades of blue. All in all,
I liked them in the mixed border will probably order some more this
year. I would get the McClure & Zimmerman catalog and the recommended
growing conditions are clearly spelled out.
