So what factors other than heredity could cause a stalk to snake or
stand upright, I wonder? KOKO KNOLL puddled on the ground next to
TH. Yesterday our winds were gusting to 30 mph and TH leaned, but
did not lay down and had two blooms on the stalk. It's true a lot of my
halfbred arils have a tendency to fall. But there must be other causes
from growing conditions which contribute or there wouldn't be the
discrepancy. I think wind causes ALL my bloomstalks to be
shorter, since they have to grow in almost constant windy conditions.
My theory is that this allows them to be stronger to withstand wind,
but when they bloom, the parachute effect of the bloom can still be too
much and down they go. This applies to any variety, not just ARs.
Are there any theories out in irisland for obtaining stouter stalks thru
cultivation methods?
