I have unsubscribed the individual sending the messages about the New
Gardening Advice Newsletter, and banned them from rejoining iris-talk. I
believe "mining" iris-talk messages for addresses is contra to egroups
policies and certainly to iris-talks.

However you should all realize that iris-talks archives both on mallorn
and on egroups are open to the public. This person probably knows about
the egroups archives. (I don't know if egroups archives are open to
non-egroups members i.e., some other list member)

Unfortunately I can not do anything to stop anyone from reading the
egroups archives unless I can get them banned completely from egroups.
Mallorn is open to anyone.

I would not mind the Garden tips site using information from iris-talk
to create tips for iris growers, although there is some risk that they
get something that is right for some and wrong for others. I think an
important aspect of iris-talk is to promote irises to the general
public, and that would be one venue.

I understand that some of you may think that someone reading our
messages and using the information in Garden Tips is a violation of
copyright law, and it may be, since Gardening Tips is a commercial site,
but that depends on so many fine legal points, some of which have not
been tested in the courts, that I don't know the answer. Lets not get
into that discussion on the list. I will be happy to discuss it
privately, and if we come up with something can always repost it to the
list, but it really is outside the scope of iris-talk.

I am sorry this has happened and if you never got a private message from
Garden Tips, so much the better.
