Re: CULT: Blooming in Northern VA

Steve -- Are you in Fairfax County? If so, there's a leash law that your
neighbors should be observing.

Subject: [iris-talk] CULT: Blooming in Northern VA

I've had a couple of plants bring forth blooms in the past few weeks here in
zone 6/7.

First was Diamond Pal, a MDB, which started to bloom on 31 March.
Unfortunately, most of the bloom stalks are shorter than the fans, making it
a bit difficult to appreciate the blooms fully. This iris was planted last
spring, after being bagged for about 9 months (I got sick before I had a
chance to plant). However, it does seem to like its location, and it is a
very vigorous grower for me. I will have to divide it this year!

The other just started opening yesterday, 11 April. It is Marita, a SDB.
Again, the bloom stalks seem to be a bit short, barely reaching over the
fans. This iris was planted just last fall.

My previous experiences have been with TBs and JI's only, and only one
garden variety JI at that, so I do not know if this is typical of the MDB
and SDB varieties of iris.

I do also have a bloom stalk on Epicenter, a TB. However, it looks to be at
least several days before it will come forth in bloom.

I do not know how tonight's forecasted weather will affect the iris. We do
have frost warnings out, with lows into the upper 20s and low 30s.

Biggest problem I am having is with the neighbors' dogs, on both sides.
They have torn up some of my markers, so I do not know what some iris are
any longer, and will have to wait until I get a bloom to try and ID them.
They have also broken many fans, and now a bloom stalk on one of my SDBs or
MDBs. Fortunately I do have a list of the iris I have planted, that can be
used to determine the varieties. I guess I will need to also make a map of
the front yard showing what is planted where as talking nicely with the
neighbors has yet to do much good. Funny how our three dogs don't go
running through their yards, even when we take them out off leash
(infrequently).
