Still trying to "self" Godzilla for lack of any other tet. LA's in my
garden. Still can't pry it open to get the pollen in. My other LA's don't
have this problem. This morning I tried breaking back the style arms to
expose the lip. Interestingly, the broken edges "bled" profusely. Don't
know if this'll help carry the pollen in or neutralize it in any way.
Guess I'll find out. A little clump of Marcy Michelle with a central fan
and about 6 increases has stalks on everything but one increase. Some
hideous seedlings bloomed this morning.
A lot of people seem to recommend bleach for TB rot. I've lost a lot of
iris because the bleach seems to inhibit root growth, and they seem to lose
all vigor and resistance. My favorite treatment is to scoop out all the
bad stuff, dig out a little dirt to expose the fresh surfaces to the sun,
and use a fingertip to rub in a little dry mortar mix, concrete mix, or
lime to cauterize the wound. May dry out your fingers, but it doesn't seem
to inhibit the plant, and the bacteria don't like the alkalinity.
Still don't know what to do when I get that virulent kind of leaf rot
disease that almost melts the leaves; or the one that starts invisibly at
the base of the newest leaf in the center of the fan the fan, showing a
little brown when it comes out but pulling out easily to reveal a soft,
pulpy base. Even though the fan usually looks strong and healthy at the
time, I have never been able to save one of these.
So far this year a little leaf spot & a few aphid are all I've had to
contend with; with Fung-away and systemic rose fertilizer that's a snap.
