Thanks Sharon for your posting. this thing of virus versus genetics is
certainly an interesting topic. It certainly seems that the arils are more
prone to this colour breaking then others. I will get this in beared iris
particularly the SDBs. When there is a cold spell (snap) a few days later I
will see a lot of these colour splotches on the flowers. I have also noted
that the arils respond accordinly and seem to do this with less provocation,
that is a milder drop in temperature. This drop in temperature can be a cold
night after a warm day. I also tend to ignore this when evaluating seedlings.
The early ones to bloom have more of this, but then they also have more of the
temperature drops. It could have something to do with a change in growth rate
or a teperature provoked change to pigmentation.
Is there any chance that you could post a photo of some of the seedligs that
you reffered to that has both types of color patches?
