sure about the ARs vs the ABs - seems like a lot of pure arils, but I
didn't check any of them to see if they 'should' have been ABs.<
Taking a different approach, I got:
85 OH [Onco Hybrids]
14 OG [Oncogelias]
8 RC [Regeliocyclus]
4 RH [Regelia Hybrids]
1 R [Regelia]
112 Total
I believe that there are a few ABs in your count, but it isn't far off.
There was a great deal more interest in pure arils and more people working
with them back in the 80s. It's a long story.....
But some ABs were coded as ARs because there has often been some confusion
regarding these codes. In the 60s CL, "AR" meant arilbred. In the 70s CL,
this had changed with "AR" now listed as aril and "AB" as arilbred.
Yet, in the early 80s when I registered my first iris, I was taught by
experienced hybridizers that we were to match the code with the award
category. Anything 1/2 or more aril competed for the C. G. White Award and
was thus to be coded "AR". Anything less than 1/2 but at least 1/4 aril
competed for the Wm. Mohr Award and was to be coded "AB". [These codes are
still used for the two categories when votes are reported in the AIS
Bulletin, even though they no longer match the registered codes, so a
certain potential for confusion still exists.]
Kay Nelson, then the Registrar-Recorder, caught this and explained to me
that for the purposes of registration the AR code was to be used only for
pure arils. She also asked that we supply the subordinate code, which she
could use to assign the competition category.
C.G. White Award: O, OH, OG, R, RH, RC, OB+, RB+, OGB+, OB, RB, OGB
Wm. Mohr Award: OB-, RB-, OGB-
Kay was certainly meticulous, but no one is perfect. I know of a few
AR-coded arilbreds that did slip into the 80s CL, but considering how many
erroneous ones must have been submitted I think it is remarkable that less
than one a year got through!
