HYB:Seedlings

Dear List,
We are fairly new to hybridizing and have another batch of
seedlings blooming this year. Much better than last year's crop thank
goodness. I have a question about bloom size. I have noticed that
the first bloom on a seedling will be large and in some cases
perfectly shaped. Then the next blooms that open are not as big or as
perfect. I want to know if this will change when the clump goes into
its second year and the root system is firmly established? Will all
the blooms eventually look as good as the first? Or, on some irises
is it a consistent trait that the top bloom will be best and all
others lesser in quality? We are enjoying some beautiful crosses this
year!
